Media Advisory – Streets Department Preparations for Inclement Weather

Philadelphia - The City of Philadelphia has begun preparations for tomorrow night's anticipated snow event.

Preparations began today with some limited brining, particularly on Roosevelt Boulevard.  Crews tomorrow will convert sanitation trucks for plowing once collections are complete. Once precipitation arrives, crews will begin salting, and then switch over to plowing when accumulations are sufficient.  As always, the initial focus will be on primary and secondary arteries, bridge decks and streets in higher elevations.

The Streets Department is preparing for a full deployment, and has 50,000 tons of salt available.  The Office of Emergency Management is closely monitoring the track of the storm. The City will announce the precise size of the deployment and other details tomorrow.

Trash and recycling collections will take place tomorrow as scheduled.  A decision on Tuesday collections will be announced tomorrow.

Note to assignment desks: The Streets Department will have a photo opportunity Monday morning, with trucks and crews preparing for tomorrow evening’s operation.  Chief Highway Engineer Steve Lorenz will be available for questions.
