Construction Set to Begin on MLK Drive
New Lighting Installations for Trail and Roadway

Philadelphia, PA – Martin Luther King Drive between the Schuylkill River Bridge and Girard Avenue overpass is scheduled for new construction beginning the week of September 24th, announced Streets Commissioner Carlton Williams. Construction is expected to last through January 2019.

Scheduled work includes replacing the existing light poles and foundations with new fiberglass light poles, adding wiring, installing LED roadway and trail lighting, and LED flood lighting for the waterfalls. Intermittent lane closures will occur through completion of the project during off-peak hours between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Trail closures will occur from Sweet Briar Road to Paine’s Park. Signage will be posted to direct travelers around the work site.

The project was recently awarded to Carr & Duff, Inc. The amount of the construction contract is approximately $500,000, with the source of funds enabled by City Capital funds.

For the duration of the work, construction crews will make every effort to minimize the inconvenience to affected drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians.  The Streets Department thanks the citizens for their ongoing support of transportation projects and asks for their patience and cooperation during the upcoming construction phase.
