PHILADELPHIA, March 11, 2020, The Block Captain Rally scheduled for Saturday, March 14th at the Pennsylvania Convention Center has been postponed as concerns increase over the potential spread of coronavirus. The Philadelphia Streets Department and Philadelphia More Beautiful Committee anticipated more than 1,500 of the city’s block captains to be joined by several locally elected and appointed officials, representatives from 50 plus organizations and workshop presenters.
“After thoughtful consideration, we decided to err on the side of caution,” said Streets Commissioner Carlton Williams. “Our block captains provide an invaluable service in their neighborhoods and we need them to remain healthy, especially as they prepare for the cleaning season. We will work with our partners to reschedule the event when conditions are more favorable.”
The Block Captain Rally includes workshops, presentations from city officials, and is billed as the city’s largest gathering of block captains. The annual event serves as the kick-off celebration for the Block Captain network cleaning season. On Saturdays during the spring and summer months, block captains work with PMBC Clean Block Officers to schedule block cleanings on their blocks that are supported by the Streets Department with additional collection of materials. More than 6,500 residents are registered as block captains.
