MEDIA ADVISORY: Streets Department’s Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event

Opportunity for Residents to Earn 100 Recycling Rewards Points

WHO:
Streets Department’s Sanitation Division

WHAT:
Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event

WHEN:
Thursday – July 26, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

WHERE:
Streets Department’s 8401 State Road at Ashburner Street.

Citizens are invited to participate in a free citywide Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection Event sponsored by the Streets Department’s Sanitation Division. This event provides citizens with an opportunity to recycle or dispose of unwanted Household Hazardous Waste accumulated in their homes or garages. As an added incentive, residents signed up for Philadelphia Recycling Rewards may use this opportunity to earn extra Recyclebank® points. A coded card worth 100 points will be given to Philadelphia Recycling Rewards participants as a bonus for recycling their unwanted hazardous waste.

Citizens may bring their old and unused cans of oil-based paint (latex or water base paint is not hazardous), solvents, pesticides, flammable liquids such as old gasoline and kerosene, used oil, antifreeze and brake fluid. These items contain elements that are potentially hazardous when disposed of in the trash. During the City’s 2011 Household Hazardous Waste program over 4,162 Philadelphia residents dropped off over 131 tons of household hazardous waste, 130 tons of computer equipment and TVs, 2,000 gallons of used motor oil, 200 gallons of antifreeze and 4 tons of automotive batteries. Trained staff will be on hand to sort and properly package materials dropped off for disposal. No waste materials generated by a business will be accepted. This event will be held rain or shine. For additional information and a list of materials eligible for drop off, please contact the Streets Department’s Customer Affairs Unit at (215) 686-5560. For more information regarding drop off events in the participating counties, visit the Streets Department’s web site at www.philadelphiastreets.com. For all City services, call 3-1-1.

STREETS DEPARTMENT REOPENS 15TH STREET BRIDGE
WEDNESDAY, MAY 15

Vehicle Weight Restriction Established

PHILADELPHIA - The 15th Street Bridge between Callowhill and Spring Garden Streets opened to vehicular traffic today, with a "three-ton, no trucks or bus weight restrictions," Streets Commissioner David J. Perri announced today. All trucks, buses and other heavy vehicles are required to detour to alternate travel routes for the entire length of the bridge.

The bridge was closed January 2013 due to severe deterioration to a section of the bridge. The Streets Department's Bridge Maintenance Unit re-enforced this section to strengthen the bridge.

The Streets Department thanks citizens for their patience and cooperation during this project.
