STREETS DEPARTMENT URGES WINTER WEATHER CAUTION

Citizens Urged to Pre-salt Sidewalks Early and Use Caution While Driving

Philadelphia, PA – Streets Commissioner Clarena Tolson urges all motorists and pedestrians to use caution on Philadelphia’s streets during today’s snowfall which is expected to start late afternoon and continue into the evening with an accumulation of one to three inches. The Streets Department started brining roadways Thursday afternoon and resumed brining this morning. Crews will mobilize equipment citywide as snow begins to fall, and will monitor for snow and icy conditions throughout the evening, concentrating on primary roads, bridges and areas of high elevation where slippery spots develop.

Citizens are also reminded to remove snow and ice from sidewalks to allow safe traveling for pedestrians so they do not have to walk in the street. A cleared sidewalk provides a safe path for pedestrians and prevents them from having to walk in the street. A path of at least 36” wide on sidewalks is required within 6 hours of the end of a storm. For owners of properties located on the corner, the path must include curb cuts and not simply a path around the corner of the property.

Motorists should allow extra time and maintain safe driving distances. With a combination of snow residuals and freezing temperatures, motorists must be alert for slippery road conditions. Motorists should also be mindful of pedestrians crossing streets.

Citizens are urged to employ the following tips for successful snow and ice management:

  • Apply commercial de-icer to your stairs and sidewalks early to prevent icy conditions.
  • Park your car as far from the corner as possible. Cars parked too close to the corner impede the turning radius of salting vehicles.
  • Remove ice and snow from windows, mirrors and all vehicle lights; State law requires removal of snow and ice from the hood and roof of vehicles.
  • Check on sick and elderly neighbors.
  • Stay tuned to local media for further updates for weather and traffic reports.

AND SPRING GARDEN STREETS CLOSURE

Effective Wednesday, January 16

PHILADELPHIA - Effective Wednesday, January 16, the 15th Street Bridge between Callowhill and Spring Garden Streets will be closed to vehicular traffic, Streets Commissioner Clarena I. W. Tolson announced today. The closure is necessary in response to a routine inspection that found structural damage to the bridge.

The closure is effective for the entire length of the bridge and will be closed to vehicular traffic until further notice, however, pedestrians and bicycles will be permitted to cross. The posted detour route includes Broad Street from Spring Garden Street to Callowill Street.

The Streets Department regrets any inconvenience resulting from this closure. We would like to thank citizens in advance for their patience and cooperation. It is our goal to have the bridge opened as soon as possible.
