PRESS RELEASE: STREETS DEPARTMENT ANNOUNCES NEW RECYCLING COORDINATOR

PHILADELPHIA, PA – Streets Commissioner Clarena I. W. Tolson announced today that Phil Bresee has joined the Streets Department as the new Recycling Coordinator for the City of Philadelphia.

“We are excited to have Mr. Bresee as the new Recycling Coordinator as he brings with him a wealth of experience,” said Streets Commissioner Clarena Tolson. “Bresee has more than 20 years of experience planning and directing recycling programs, and was most recently the Recycling Program manager for Broward County, Florida, the second largest county in the southeast with a population of approximately 1.8 million and the 18th largest county in the United States.

As the Recycling Coordinator for the City of Philadelphia, Mr. Bresee will be responsible for the continued realization of the Streets Department’s goal to increase recycling participation and diversion rates through initiatives, such, as the Philadelphia Recycling Rewards Program, and improved commercial and institutional recycling.

“I’m happy to be here and look forward to building on the City’s recycling accomplishments from the past few years, and the progress made towards becoming the greenest city in America,” Mr. Bresee says. “There are a number of ready-made partnerships that exist between the City and various stakeholders that I believe will allow us to continue increasing recycling, not just among residents but among businesses and institutions as well.

Mr. Bresee has worked extensively in Florida and Maryland with various public bodies and stakeholder groups. His experience includes managing recyclables processing services, curbside recycling expansion projects, recycling services for county schools, government agencies and parks, apartment and condominium recycling programs, electronics recycling, and solid waste planning.

Mr. Bresee has a B.S. in Political Science from Towson State University in Baltimore and pursued an MBA at Frostburg State University in Maryland.

PHILADELPHIA - Effective Wednesday, January 16, the 15th Street Bridge between Callowhill and Spring Garden Streets will be closed to vehicular traffic, Streets Commissioner Clarena I. W.
